The functions and maintenance of the Pittsburgh Lock Machine

The Pittsburgh Lock Machine (also known as the Roller Die Machine or the Seam Tying Machine) is a necessary thin plate forming equipment for sheet metal processing (especially in the manufacturing of ducts). It achieves mechanical connection without welding by using rollers to compress the metal plates, thereby achieving high strength and high sealing performance. 

I. Core Function

Main Application: Galvanized sheet / stainless steel ducts for ventilation, air conditioning, and HVAC (rectangular / circular) sealing, splicing, and corner connection.

Applicable Materials: 0.4–1.5mm thin sheets (galvanized sheet, aluminum sheet, stainless steel sheet).

Advantages: High strength, good air tightness, no need for welding / riveting, aesthetically pleasing, low cost, high efficiency.

II. Working Principle

Structure: Frame, motor, reduction transmission, multiple sets of rollers (forming core), feeding mechanism.

Process: Motor → belt / gear → synchronous rotation of upper and lower rollers → board edge passing through roller gap → continuous rolling and plastic deformation → forming standard tongue-and-groove profile.

Multifunctional Tongue-and-Groove Machine (Most Common): Multi-purpose, can produce 6–7 types of profiles:

Combined Angle (East Asian Profile): Rectangular duct corner connection

Single Flat Edge / Snap Profile: Sheet splicing

Right Angle, Z-shaped Profile

Elbow, C-shaped Insert

Special Types:

Combined Angle Tongue-and-Groove Machine: Special for rectangular duct corner connection

Insert Tongue-and-Groove Machine: C-shaped / S-shaped insert
